Establishing ceasefire crucial for security of region: FM

TEHRAN, Apr. 20 (MNA) – Iran's Foreign Minister has described stopping the Zionist regime's crimes in Gaza and the West Bank as well as establishing a lasting ceasefire as the main factor for maintaining stability and security in the region.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who is in New York to attend the Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East and Palestine as well as diplomatic consultations, held a meeting with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira on Friday.

They discussed the latest regional and international developments as well as bilateral relations between the two countries.

Explaining the recent powerful anti-Israel operation by Iranian armed forces, Amir-Abdollahian said that the military action of the Islamic Republic of Iran was in response to the crimes committed by the Zionist regime, and was done in accordance with international law as a form of legitimate defense.

He warned against any adventurism by the Zionist regime, stressing that the Islamic Republic of Iran would respond even more strongly to any miscalculation by the Zionist regime.

Thanking Brazil’s constructive role in helping stop the Zionist regime's genocide in Gaza, the top Iranian diplomat emphasized that the main factor for maintaining stability and security in the region is stopping the Zionist regime's crimes in Gaza and the West Bank and establishing a lasting ceasefire.

He described the continuation of US support for the Zionist regime and its lack of determination to end the war alongside Netanyahu's warmongering as the main reason for the continuation of the genocide against the Palestinians, emphasizing the need to continue the efforts of the international community, especially Islamic countries, to end the genocide in Gaza.

Amir-Abdollahian also expressed his country’s readiness for broadening ties with Brazil at all political, economic, and cultural levels.

Mauro Vieira, for his part, emphasized the risks posed by the expansion of tensions in the region, saying that Brazil wants to de-escalate tensions in the region and will do its best to help establish peace and security in the region.

He further emphasized the importance of expanding his country's relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran at all political, economic, and cultural levels.
